Softball Rolls Past Flying Eagles

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Softball team moves to 13-14 overall, 11-13 in conference play after hosting Southwest Virginia Community College over the weekend for the three-game conference series.

 

In game one, Richard Bland scored six runs in the first inning, which helped them defeat Southwest Virginia Community College 9-1 in the opening game. Madison Nixon doubled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Brookelynne Winterson singled, scoring two runs, Sara Graham doubled, scoring one run, and Taylor Green hit into a fielder's choice, scoring one run. Richard Bland added to their early lead in the bottom of third inning after Green singled, Janiya Washington singled, and Ashley Beamon hit into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run. Beamon, McKynzi Dawson, Green, Washington, Nixon, Graham, and Winterson each collected one hit for Richard Bland. Dawson stole two bases and Green led with two runs batted in. McKynzi Dawson earned the win for Richard Bland. The right-handed pitcher surrendered four hits and one run over five innings, striking out four and walking four.

 

In game two, Richard Bland won big over the Flying Eagles, 10-2 in the nightcap. The Flying Eagles opened the scoring in the first after an error scored one run. In the bottom of the first inning, Richard Bland took the lead after Jessica Taggart singled, and Sara Graham hit into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run. Richard Bland added one run in the second after Taylor Green singled. The Statesmen added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on two hits. Green singled, scoring one run, and Brookelynne Winterson homered to center field, scoring two runs. Taggart provided pop in the middle of the lineup, leading the Statesmen with three runs batted in, going 2-for-4. Taylor Green earned the win for Richard Bland. The righty surrendered seven hits and two runs over six innings, striking out four and walking three.

 

Game three was called in the second inning, with the Statesmen ahead 7-1, due to weather and field conditions. This game is marked as a no contest and will not be made up.

 

The Richard Bland College softball team is set to close the regular season on Friday, April 26th and Saturday, April 27th against Brunswick Community College, at home. The team's sophomores will be recognized during the series. Games one and two will take place on Friday in a 12pm doubleheader, with game three on Saturday at 12pm, with a Region 10 Tournament appearance on the line.
