Comeback Attempt Falls Short on Sophomore Night

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team moves to 13-7 overall, 13-7 in conference play after hosting the Eagles of Wake Technical Community College Wednesday evening. Prior to the start of the game, Richard Bland recognized sophomores Kennedee Matthews, Amari Hunter, Chamara Martin, Natayvia Lipscomb, Reiley Gibson, Mercedes Gaither, Nyomi Ndango, and Imani Felton for their efforts during their careers as Statesmen.

 

Wake Tech took a commanding lead to open the game and through the first half, 24-41. Richard Bland gained some momentum fighting back outscoring the Eagles 16-13 in the third, and 21-12 in the fourth, but they came up just short at the final whistle, falling to the Eagles 61-66.

 

Kennedee Matthews led the way with 16 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals., followed by Cierra McGinlay with 12 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Natayvia Lipscomb chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds, and Chamara Martin seven points and three rebounds. Amari Hunter added six points and seven key steals in the fourth quarter helping the Statesmen close in on the Eagles, in the failed comeback attempt. Mercedes Gaither and Nyomi Ndango also brought down six and five boards respectively.

 

Richard Bland shot 55.0% from the charity stripe, 37.3% from the field, and 37.5% from the perimeter.

 

The Richard Bland College women's basketball team next travels to Cape Fear Community College on Friday, February 23rd and Brunswick Community College on Saturday, February 24th. Friday's tip-off is set for 5pm, while Saturday's is set for 3pm.
