Matthews Leads Women’s Hoops to Two Conference Wins

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team moves to 15-7 overall, 15-7 in conference play after traveling to Cape Fear Community College on Friday, February 23rd and Brunswick Community College on Saturday, February 24th.

 

On Friday, the Sea Devils jumped out to an early five point lead through 10 minutes of play, and extended their lead to 14, 23-37, at the break. Richard Bland exploded in the third quarter notching 24 points, and 16 additional points in the fourth, to bring home a narrow 63-61 conference win.

 

Two Statesmen tallied double-digit figures in the win led by Kennedee Matthews with 17 points, five assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Amari Hunter followed closely behind with 12 points, six steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Off the bench, Cierra McGinlay chipped in with nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Natayvia Lipscomb added seven points, Nyomi Ndango six, Khamaya Earley five, Chamara Martin four, and Alicia Powers three in the win. Mercedes Gaither and Reiley Gibson grabbed six and two boards for the Statesmen.

 

Richard Bland shot 71.4% from the charity stripe, 62.9% from the field, and 44.4% from the perimeter.

 

On Saturday Richard Bland jumped out in front, leading by nine after the first 10 minutes on play, and added nine more in the second, to hold a 28-17 lead at the break. The Statemen added 36 points in the second half, to bring home a second conference win on the weekend, 64-40.

 

Two Statesmen tallied double-digit figures in the win led by Matthews with 27 points, five assists, three steals, and two rebounds. McGinlay added 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Amari Hunter tallied eight points, five steals, four rebounds, and three assists on the day. Natayvia Lipscomb chipped in with five points, three rebounds, and two assists.

 

Richard Bland shot 100.0% from the charity stripe, 39.7% from the field, and 48.0% from the perimeter.

 

The Richard Bland College women's basketball team next travels to Southwest Virginia Community College on Wednesday, February 28th for a 2pm conference contest.
