Richard Bland Opens Campaign At Eagles' Cup Tournament

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. – The Richard Bland College women's golf team will open its 2016-17 campaign at the Eagles' Cup Tournament on September 17-18, a 36-hole event at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh, North Carolina.  The Statesmen of second-year head coach, Dr. Shawn Holt, feature two returning golfers, including sophomore Anna Carole Cole/Halifax who qualified for the 2016 NJCAA National Championships, along with four newcomers to this year's squad.

Cole finished 106th at the National Championships with a 54-hole score of 113-96-112--321.  She posted a 36-hole score of 100-103--203 to finish ninth at the 2016 Region X Championships.  The other returning sophomore is Savannah Porter/Midlothian.  She shot 116-118--234 to finish 13th at the Region X event last spring.

New to the second-year program this year are sophomores Casey Firewicz/Fredericksburg, Taylor Pope/Disputanta and Jada Robinson/Richmond, along with freshman Kenedi Byard/Chesterfield.

"Our team has a very good chance to be competitive at every tournament this season," said Dr. Holt.  "I think we will have an opportunity to qualify for the National Tournament.  In addition, this group does very well in the classroom with multiple Honors Program student-athletes."

Richard Bland will compete again at the Johnston Community College Tournament on October 9 in Smithfield, North Carolina.
