Women's Soccer Tops USC Sumter

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College of William and Mary Women's Soccer team moves to 1-0-1 overall, and 1-0 in conference play after their first conference game of the 2021 season.

 

The women's soccer team traveled to Sumter, SC for a conference matchup with USC Sumter this morning.

 

Starting the scoring off early with a low cross through the 18 yard box from Jennifer Argueta, Kamiah Stewart scored her first goal of the season and put the Statesmen on top 1-0 in the 2nd minute of the game.

 

As the momentum and energy remained high, Gabriella Sylstra was the next Statesmen to find the back of the net for her first goal of the day, unassisted in the 11th minute. In the 28th minute, Amanda-Grace Marshall took advantage of a 1v1 opportunity from the back line and scored her first goal of the season, to put the Statesmen ahead 3-0. As halftime quickly approached, Gabriella Sylstra added another tally in the 40th minute, from a layoff pass by Jennifer Argueta, who then switched roles and scored her own tally, assisted by Sylstra. Sasha Fields sealed the first 45 minutes of regulation with a goal of her own by a strong hit between the pipes.

 

As the second half began, Richard Bland continued to press the opponents' defensive line. In the 62nd minute, Jennifer Argueta struck a ball for her second goal of the day, past the Sumter keeper making it 7-0 Statesmen. 2 minutes later, Candace Johnson notched her first goal of the season.

 

In the 75th minute, an own goal by Sumter off a corner kick, propelled the Statesmen to a 9-0 lead. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Alexis Elrod found the back of the net, followed by Sasha Fields adding her second tally of the day with 20 seconds remaining in regulation.

 

Tiffany Hargett made 1 save in the 11-0 win. Elrod was credited with 13 shots, 10 on frame, Sylstra had 10 shots, 4 on frame, Marshall had 7 shots, 5 on frame, and Jennifer Argueta finished the day with 3 assists.

 

Richard Bland women's soccer next plays Saturday September 18, against Spartanburg Methodist College at 12pm for their home opener.
