Richard Bland Will Play In Region 10 Tournament Quarterfinal Sunday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College, the No. 2 seed for the 2017 Region 10 Men's Basketball Tournament, will play No. 10 Vance-Granville (N.C.) Community College in a tournament quarterfinal contest on Sunday afternoon, March 5 at 4 p.m. at Statesman Hall.  The Statesmen finished their regular season with an overall record of 25-4, including 17-2 in Region 10, and are ranked No. 8 in this week's NJCAA Division II Poll.  Vance-Granville is 6-24 overall after advancing with a first round win past No. 7 Guilford Tech, 90-87.

Ticket prices for the first two rounds of the Region 10 Tournament at Richard Bland are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens age 65 and up, and youth age 12 and under, as well as for students with IDs from participating schools.  Admission is free for all Richard Bland faculty/staff and students with IDs.

Scouting the Statesmen
Nationally-ranked No. 8 Richard Bland is 25-4 overall after a 94-86 home win past Wake Technical (N.C.) on February 25.  The Statesmen, who are an outstanding 99-29 (.773) over the past four seasons, are coached by head coach Chuck Moore, who is in his fourth season, and assisted by fourth-year assistant coach Brian Henderson, second-year assistant coach Preston Beverly and first-year graduate assistant coach Mike Wynn.

Through 29 games, Richard Bland has been led in scoring by 6-9 sophomore center Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina, who is averaging 12.9 points (66 FG%), 9.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks with 11 double-doubles.  He is followed by 6-4 sophomore guard Deandre Clark/Orange, who is averaging 12.4 points (69 3FGs), 3.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while local 6-3 sophomore guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg is averaging 12.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists.  Richard Bland is averaging 83.9 points per game, while allowing just 67.8 points to opponents for a scoring margin of +16.1.

 

Scouting the Vanguards
Vance-Granville enters the tournament 5-24 overall after a 108-102 road loss at Guilford Tech on Feb. 25, and is coached by DeMarcus Oliver.  The Vanguards have been led in scoring by sophomore TyQuon Reid (23.5), freshman NiQuon Cousins (19.4) and sophomore Chris Pernell (12.1).  VGCC is averaging 80.8 points.

Series History
Richard Bland has never lost to Vance-Granville (8-0).  The Statesmen swept the Vanguards this season by scores of 99-68 (Dec. 14-A) and 101-71 (Feb. 22-H), led by Gevon Arrington and Jaquan Wooten, who averaged 14.0 points and 13.5 points, respectively, in the two wins. 

Among the National Leaders
Richard Bland is ranked ninth in NJCAA Division II rebounding (46.1), 14th in steals (10.9), 16th in blocks (4.8), 22nd in assists (18.7) and 40th in scoring (83.9).  Jaquan Wooten is ranked fourth nationally in field goal percentage (65.8%, 146-222), fifth in blocks (2.8) and 19th in rebounding (9.8).  Freshman Ricky Hicks/Bronx, New York is ranked 38th nationally in assists (4.9).  Deandre Clark is tied for 45th nationally in three-point field goals (69).

All-Region 10 Honors
Jaquan Wooten was selected to the 2016-17 All-Region 10 First Team, while Gevon Arrington and Deandre Clark were each named to the All-Region 10 Second Team.  Pitt (N.C.) Community College sophomore guard Jaiquan Manning (15.4 points, 8.0 assists) was selected as the Region 10 Player of the Year, while Louisburg (N.C.) College (25-3) head coach Neil Dixon was named the Coach of the Year.  Manning, Wooten and sophomore Troy Locke (13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds) of Louisburg were designated as the region's All-American nominations.
